St. Andrew’s Anglican Church

Gleichen’s St. Andrew’s Anglican Church is rich with history. Construction was started by Archdeacon Timms in 1885. The first service was held on November 30, 1886. At that time, the church was under the Diocese of Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. It is now in the Calgary Diocese and members belong to the Wheatland Parish. In November 2005, the church will celebrate 119 years of services. The church has been designated an historical site by the Province of Alberta.

The Anglican Church Women

The Anglican Church Women are an integral part of St. Andrew’s. The earliest work of the Anglican Women began in 1887, and they are still actively involved in the community. Through their endless fundraising, the church is still able to serve the Gleichen and Cluny area.

St. Andrew’s holds an annual Hymn Sing in June where members of the community enjoy hymns sung in memory of the pioneers who settled the area. During the winter months, there is Sunday school for the younger crowd, and the Vacation Bible School is always a welcome break during the summer.

Although the congregation is small, the people in the community work hard to keep it functional. The congregation celebrates the church’s anniversary every year with a spaghetti supper held on November 30. It is a time to give thanks to the people and the community who work so hard to keep St. Andrew’s serving the Gleichen and Cluny area.
